Century City’s Smart City philosophy is to integrate and engrain Smart City practices through encouraging all Century City stakeholders to be active participants in the goal of Century City not only being a Smart City but transforming itself into a Future City.  This entails stakeholders aligning the way they approach, activate, invest and action their unique positions within Century City, with the goal of creating and sustaining a Future City.

Being a Smart City is not something we aspire to be.
Being Smart is just something we do.

“Century City has always been so much more than a development project. It is a living, breathing example of what happens when visionary urban planning, technological innovation, and inclusive governance converge in one space. Spanning roughly 250 hectares, this diverse precinct has not only evolved into a vibrant hub of commerce, residential life, and leisure, but has also become South Africa’s benchmark Smart City.” says Marinus Boshoff, Chief Executive Officer of Century City Property Owners’ Association (CCPOA).

“With a development value exceeding R30 billion to date, Century City is home to over 700 businesses, ranging from global corporations to dynamic start-ups. The precinct attracts over 21 million visitors annually, offering more than 454,000 m² of commercial space and 212,000 m² of retail space, and is anchored by over 4,000 front doors, with an estimated 12,000 residents. It is a truly multi-generational community with schools, educare centres, and a retirement resort bound together by an urban management model that places innovation, safety, and inclusivity at its core.

“What sets Century City apart is its commitment to being a Smart City in practice, not just in aspiration. Our smart solutions approach turns concepts into operational reality, with facial recognition technology standing out as a strategic success. By integrating South Africa’s first public space facial recognition platform into our Service Operations Centre, we have created a powerful layer of intelligence and efficiency that enhances situational awareness and strengthens safety across the precinct. This demonstrates how technology can be harnessed to deliver measurable value to residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

Forming part of the Smart Community segment, our custom designed app plugs into our community by giving access to the latest on what’s happening in Century City. It’s also a platform for businesses within the precinct to connect with our community and vice versa, including a full business directory.

In addition, the app allows users to check live traffic camera footage that updates every minute, and they can report maintenance and infrastructure faults directly to our Security Operations Centre (SOC).  Another handy functionality is that you can make a call directly to the SOC in the case of an emergency.

Further to this, our Smart City philosophy also extends to the city’s natural resources. Complementing this is the 16-hectare Intaka Island conservation area, a wetland sanctuary that naturally purifies water, supports incredible biodiversity and provides renewable energy solutions.

It stands as proof that sustainability and large-scale growth can work in harmony, reinforcing Century City’s position at the forefront of urban innovation and resilience.” explains Boshoff.
