Sunday 27 September is the day to do very little, and to do it well. The Slow Sunday Market is back on Central Park from 9:00 to 14:00, with free entry and free parking. There’s no schedule to keep and nothing to rush for. Come when you like, stay as long as you like, and take it slow.

A morning with no rush

The name is the plan! Slow Sunday is about swapping the weekend to-do list for a coffee in the sun and a patch of grass to sit on. Wander the stalls at your own pace, eat something good and let the morning stretch out. Nobody is watching the clock, and you don’t have to be either.

The park makes it easy. Central Park is one of Cape Town’s most beautiful urban parks, with plenty of lawn, a few benches and enough room for everyone to spread out.

Live music from Gia McKay

Gia McKay is our musician for the day. She is an emerging South African singer-songwriter and a medical student based in Cape Town. Her sound blends contemporary soul with acoustic pop, and she draws inspiration from artists like Adele, YEBBA and Freya Ridings.

It’s music that suits a slow Sunday. Bring a blanket, find a spot on the lawn and let it play while you eat, talk or do nothing at all.

Good food, at the pace of a long lunch

Food is the centre of the market, and there’s enough choice that you can graze all morning. On the savoury side, look out for stonebaked pizzas, shawarmas, sushi, bao buns, empanadas, ribs and loaded nachos. For something sweet, there are maritozzo cream buns, focaccia, waffles and churros.

To drink, you’ll find barista coffee and smoothies, as well as craft beer, bubbly and gin cocktails. A good approach is to collect a few things from different stalls, carry them back to your blanket and share.

Browse the stalls, slowly

Between bites, take your time with the makers’ stalls. You’ll find artisan makers and crafters, clothing and jewellery designers, candles, books, leather goods, toys and eco-friendly products. Each stall is a small local business, so it’s a good way to find a gift, or something for yourself, while supporting people who live and work nearby.

Art in the Park

Art in the Park is an art exhibition where the work is available to purchase. It is hosted at The Club House, and it’s a quiet, easy way to spend part of the morning. Walk through at your own pace, and if something catches your eye, you can take it home.

Kids’ corner

The market is planned with families in mind, so the children have plenty to do while you sit back and relax.

On Sunday 27 September, Regardt the Magician will be performing. Regardt Laubscher has been performing professional magic for over two decades, and his shows are made for ages 3 to 103. He blends comedy and dramatic magic in a wizard show that is energetic and interactive, so expect plenty of laughs and some tricks you won’t be able to explain.

Beyond that, there is a jumping castle and a big lawn for running around. You’ll also find lawn games, popcorn, candy floss and gelato, so nobody has to get bored or hungry.

Take the tram, or take a boat

If you’d like to see a bit more of Century City, the Century City Tramway will run between Central Park and Ratanga Park. It’s a short, easy trip that kids of all ages love.

You can also head to Intaka Island for a boat ride if you’d like a slower pace on the water and see the neighbourhood from a completely different perspective.

Your Sunday, your speed

Start with a coffee, watch the magic show, look at some art, take the tram, eat lunch on the grass and listen to Gia McKay.
