The 17th edition of the Century City Express with Discovery Vitality delivered many memorable moments, but one of the most inspiring highlights was welcoming the Warrior on Wheels Foundation to this year’s race.
Taking part in the Century City Express for the very first time, the young Warriors reminded everyone that sport has the power to unite communities and break down barriers. Their participation showcased a truly inclusive adventure for children with special needs and proved that when inclusion leads the way, there are no limits to what is possible.
Hosted as part of the broader Century City Sports Festival, the festival also featured an exciting Para Volleyball tournament, further reinforcing Century City’s commitment to creating an environment where everyone has the opportunity to participate.
Warrior on Wheels, empowering children through adventure
The Warrior on Wheels Foundation is dedicated to uplifting and empowering children with disabilities by creating opportunities for adventure and sport.
The organisation focuses on providing inclusive experiences tailored specifically for children with special needs, helping to build confidence, self esteem and a sense of belonging. Through these initiatives, Warriors on Wheels is actively changing perceptions of ability and bridging the gap between able bodied and differently abled communities.
A key part of their work involves developing and providing specialised adaptive equipment that enables children with special needs to take part in adventure activities and extreme sports. These opportunities allow children to explore new passions, develop independence and experience the joy of movement and adventure.
Beyond the activities themselves, the foundation connects communities of children with special needs, their families, carers and support networks. This creates a powerful support structure that encourages inclusion and helps children realise their full potential.
Race day magic at the Century City Express
Race day brought an atmosphere of excitement, anticipation and inspiration as three remarkable young Warriors lined up at the starting line.
With their dedicated guide runners beside them and supporters cheering from the sidelines, the young athletes set off along the scenic course through Century City. Together they powered through the route with determination and teamwork, showing that sport is about far more than competition.
Their participation was not simply about reaching the finish line. It was a celebration of courage, perseverance and the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to experience the thrill of sport and adventure.
For many spectators, the moment served as a powerful reminder of what inclusive sport can achieve when communities come together to create opportunities for everyone.
Para Volleyball brings inclusive sport to the festival
Adding to the festival’s inclusive spirit, for the second year running, was the Para Volleyball tournament, which happened the evening before, and showcased the fast-paced and highly-competitive sport of sitting volleyball.
The matches demonstrated exceptional skill, teamwork and determination, drawing enthusiastic support from spectators throughout the day. As an internationally recognised Paralympic sport, Para Volleyball continues to grow in popularity and offers athletes with disabilities an opportunity to compete at the highest levels.
Hosting the tournament as part of the Century City Sports Festival highlighted the importance of providing platforms for adaptive sport and celebrating the incredible athletes who compete in these disciplines.
