Century City’s biggest event of the year was a resounding success! The entire precinct including parks, roads and canals were abuzz with no less than 14 sporting codes from Friday, 1 March to Sunday, 3 March 2024.

“We are over the moon with the success of our 15th Century City Sports Festival! Despite some strong winds experienced on Saturday afternoon, which caused the dragon boat races to be curtailed, the weekend resulted in some incredible sporting moments,” says Chris Blackshaw, CEO of Century City Property Owners’ Association (CCPOA). “It’s the most sporting codes that have ever participated, and the number of runners exceeded our expectations. We are delighted that Discovery Vitality was once again onboard as the main sponsor for our annual Century City 10km Express and 5km Fun Run, and we look forward to our partnership continuing for many more years to come.”

The busy schedule started on Friday evening with Touch Rugby in Central Park, 5-a-side Football, Hockey and Netball at Curro, while the first Dragon Boat Open kicked off in Grand Central.

Saturday 2 March, was the runners’ big day with the Century City 10km Express with Discovery Vitality and 5km Fun Run and the festival’s largest participation in one code. Kicking off at 7:00, this event included runners and walkers from all walks of life, drawing the most participants and largest crowd of the weekend.  5 218 runners entered of which 3 469 completed the 10km.

A calendar favourite, runners enjoyed a beautiful, cool morning along a diverse course which meandered through the precinct from just beyond Intaka Island, past the kilometres of canals, through Ratanga Park, with the finish in Central Park.

Runners of all ages and fitness levels enjoyed the fun of the 5km and more serious runners attempted to improve on their personal bests with the flat 10km.  Various running clubs participated including the local Century City, Bellville, Edgemead Athletic Clubs, with no less than 220 runners. Khayelitsha, Langa, Tygerberg, West Coast, and various universities and corporate teams also entered.

Overall winner, William Kaptein from Tymebank Langa kicked up some serious dust, finishing the 10km at a speedy 29:38, one of the fastest times witnessed at this race. Hot on his heels was Rowhaldo Ratz with a time of 29:44 and in 3rd place overall, Edward Jack at 30:17.

The first lady was Kyla Jacobs from Boxer AC WP with a time of 33:45, just snatching podium position from repeat champion, Lydia Chidzivo coming in at 35:16.  In 3rd place, Lisha van Onselen finished at a time of 36:16.

In the 40-49 age group, Edwin Chimombo won the men’s and Christiane Adriaanse the ladies’, with a hat trick.

Another Century City 10km Express repeat champion, Obertina Kanyongo, running for Nedbank Running Club, won the 50-59 ladies’ category once again, with a time of 43:03. The men’s race was won by Tsungai Mwenengeni.

The winners in the 60-69 age category, Eric Coetzee did a time of 37:49 and Dawn Saunders finished at 48:36.

Neville Frieslich and Maureen Verster were the winners in the 70+ category.

The 5km Fun Run was won by U19 Mogamad Tawqeer Ismail with a speedy time of 18:13, and the first female over the line was Shanise Davids with a time of 18:24.

Other events on Saturday included 5-a-side Football at Curro, Canoe Polo on the large water body at Ratanga Park, Canoe Juniors and Dragon Boat racing on the Grand Canal. A new sporting code, Volleyball, took place on Central Park in the afternoon and early evening.

The Dragon Boats are always a crowd favourite, with great long distance and short distance racing taking place. Unfortunately, races had to be abandoned again this year due to strong winds building.

The Sports Festival continued on Sunday, with Cycle2Ride Mountain biking taking place in the vicinity of the e-parking area near Canal Walk with a record number of young entrants. The exciting Western Province Cycling Criterium started from Link Road through the precinct on a circular route.  A return in sporting code, Stand Up Paddling (SUP) took place in Halfmoon Bay from mid-day.

Century City wishes to thank all the teams, participants, and sponsors for making this yet another very successful Sports Festival.
