A DIFFERENT APPROACH

Date 28 February 2021

The Century City Sports Festival has gained momentum and great popularity over the last 13 years, with 2020’s festival packing a punch with 8 sporting codes over three days, the total number of participants across the spectrum more than 6 000.

What to do when you are amidst a pandemic and the gathering of people is prohibited?  You take a different approach!

Instead of hosting one event over one weekend, 2021’s Century City Sports Festival will take place over the year, with each sporting code participating individually, at such a time when each sporting code is allowed and able to.

Kicking off with the signature event, the Century City Express 2021 with Discovery Vitality, it is the only sporting code that had to be hosted over the same date annually to secure date for future races. (In terms of the Western Province Athletics (WPA) regulations).

Virtual races became hugely popular during 2020 when we faced various levels of lockdowns and regulations on outdoor activities. Partnering with Top Events SA, the Century City Express 2021 with Discovery Vitality took place over the weekend of 27 and 28 February.

The race received 1 019 registrations and 1 014 runners completed the virtual race.

The event allowed runners to compete at any time and location of their choosing, uploading their results using a fitness device and STRAVA app, ensuring all regulations regarding mass gathering are adhered to and complied with the WPA regulations for hosting such events.

As per previous years, the race saw a few teams and clubs participate with Century City Athletic Club running at Century City on both days and other members running across the Peninsula. The Century City Hotel and Conference Centre had 18 participants who ran with great enthusiasm and energy.

“Running this race together as a team, has been a tradition since we opened in 2016 and this year was no different.” says Glyn Taylor, joint CEO. “As we’ve done over the last five years, we ran this race in solidarity and our unity is testimony that we will continue to weather any storm the best way we know how, and that’s together.”

Not only were cash prizes and other prizes up for grabs, but as a Discovery Vitality member, runners earned 600 points for running a minimum of 5km or 6 500 steps, a virtual VIP hospitality voucher from Woolworths, and a 50% refund on race entry fees.

The virtual race format allowed a 5km, 10km and 15km for the first time, and made it possible for runners outside of Cape Town to participate. Runners participated in the Eastern Cape, Central Johannesburg, Pretoria, Balito and there was even a request from a runner in Mexico!  Locally, most of the participants took advantage of the great weather and ran along beautiful coastal routes such as Blouberg, Muizenberg and Sea Point Promenade.
