On 12 June 2024, Century City conducted its quarterly disaster simulation exercise. These exercises are designed to prepare and train the Century City Emergency Response Team (ERT) for effective response and recovery during real disasters. By simulating various emergency scenarios, the team can identify potential weaknesses, improve coordination and communication, and practice critical scene management skills.
The Century City Safety and Security Team, as the first line of response to any fire or medical incident, demonstrated unwavering dedication. With extensive fire and medical training, they are always on standby to respond to any emergency 24/7. This commitment to safety is a key service provided to all Century City.
“During this quarter’s simulation, we created a scenario involving a multiple vehicle pile-up on Century Avenue, with two of the vehicles catching fire due to the collision impact,” said Marinus Boshoff, Safety & Security Manager. “The various response teams managed the scene and assisted the ‘injured patients’.”
Other key participants included members of the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management, Fire and Rescue, and Traffic Services.
“A disaster simulation exercise offers numerous benefits, including enhanced preparedness and resilience,” Boshoff continued. “By simulating realistic emergency scenarios, the Century City teams, and other participants can practice and refine our response strategies, identify gaps in our plans, and improve coordination among various agencies and stakeholders. This hands-on experience fosters better communication, quick decision-making, and effective resource management. Additionally, it raises awareness and confidence among participants, ensuring they are better equipped to protect lives, minimise damage and facilitate swift recovery when an actual disaster occurs.”
