On Tuesday 23 April 2019, Mr. Graham Clarke, a resident of 33 years at Eric Miles Cheshire Home in Sanddrift, passed away tragically after falling with his motorized wheelchair into the canal near the Waterstone residential development in Century City.

Extensive efforts by his carer, Century City Safety and Security first responders and ER 24 paramedics to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

According to Alet Bosman, manager of the Eric Miles Cheshire home, Graham had previously suffered numerous strokes and is thought to have had another attack resulting in him activating the chin control and steering the wheelchair off the pedestrian walkway and into the canal.

Chris Blackshaw, CEO of the Century City Property Owners’ Association (CCPOA) which is responsible for the day to day operations of the precinct, was on the scene shortly after Graham had been lifted out of the water.

“On behalf of the CCPOA, I would like to offer our condolences to Graham’s family, friends and the staff at the Eric Miles Cheshire Home”.

“It is a very sad day for all involved when we experience an event as tragic as this. I would like to commend the Century City Safety and Security team first responders and ER24 for their quick response and extensive efforts to resuscitate Graham.  I would also like to offer my special thanks to the Waterstone West resident who assisted and consoled the carer throughout the afternoon.”

Events such as these are a reminder to residents and visitors to please be vigilant when around our canals and any large bodies of water.
