Since its highly anticipated debut into Cape Town’s retail playground twenty years ago, Canal Walk Shopping Centre has firmly embossed itself into the Mother City as the premier shopping destination, enjoyed by local and international visitors alike.

Canal Walk Shopping Centre has pioneered the retail sector since its inception and was billed as the most ambitious retail development in Africa. It was hailed for its vision as the catalyst of the Century City node and constituted the largest single private sector contract awarded in South Africa at the time of its development.

Today, the retail icon stands at 149 069sqm gross lettable area. If its achievements highlight the way forward, the rise of Canal Walk is set to continue.

“As we stand at a twenty-year milestone, the vision that modeled the creation of Canal Walk endures. The centre consistently grows in popularity and significance and continues to meet every shopper’s need.” says Gavin Wood, CEO of Canal Walk Shopping Centre.

“The incredible support from the community and the many international and local visitors to the city have all ensured that Canal Walk’s status as one of the best places to shop, see and be seen at, dine and relax in Cape Town continues to be elevated,” Wood points out.

With over 400 of South Africa’s most loved retailers, an impressive range of fashion brands, exciting entertainment and dining. Canal Walk is proud to boast that the centre has retained 108 of its original tenants since its first year of opening on 26 October 2000.

Furthermore, Canal Walk promotes retail excellence by evaluating the retailers’ performance and inspiring new levels of quality and service through the annual Retail Excellence Awards programme.

The centre has also undertaken a ‘green’ approach, revealing an eco-friendly shopping environment. “We are constantly seeking opportunities to enhance the energy efficiency of Canal Walk and testing and assessing the equipment, facilities and initiatives which are increasingly being brought to market. This year the centre received its 5 Green Star rating from the Green Building Council South Africa” notes Wood.

The location plays a vital role in the success of the centre. Canal Walk is set in the heart of the 250ha Century City area and has excellent access from the N1 and regular tourist shuttles.

Canal Walk Shopping Centre has achieved many coveted Gold Footprint Marketing Awards at the South African Council Shopping Centres (SACSC) Spectrum Awards. Canal Walk excelled at the prestigious International Council of Shopping Centres (ICSC) Global MAXI Awards.

Known as Africa’s shopping destination of choice, with an exciting and ever-changing line up of promotional and live events, and a Visitor Information Centre accredited by Cape Town Tourism, the shopping centre strives to provide the “Have It All” experience.

Since the purchase of the centre in 2003, Hyprop Investments Limited (80%) and Ellerine Bros (Pty) Ltd (20%) ensures that Canal Walk’s focus remains relevant and that its positive performance endures by offering shoppers the best experience.

“We are excited to be celebrating our twentieth anniversary and the achievements which the centre and its retailers have made over the last years, and we would like to extend our appreciation to our loyal shoppers who are the key ingredient in our recipe for success,” says Wood.
