Canal Walk Shopping Centre once again staged its world renowned #MandelaMosaic building, charitable event in aid of the no fee LEAP Science and Maths schools

International Nelson Mandela Day (18th July) came about when, on his 90th birthday, the late President uttered the words: “It’s in your hands now,” as he urged world leaders to make the world a better place.  While it is not a public holiday, it is a day for the public and Corporate South Africa to unite, if only for 67 minutes, to do good – for each other, animals, and the environment. Providing the ideal opportunity to do justice to Madiba’s legacy, Canal Walk Shopping Centre once again staged its world renowned #MandelaMosaic building, charitable event. 

In aid of the no fee LEAP Science and Maths schools, Canal Walk Shopping Centre, LEAP and their partners – Rhodes Food Group - called for donations of food cans and volunteers to help them create the super-sized likeness of the Father of our Nation.

Each tin of food was placed in the mapped out image, in the food court at the Centre, for the teams of volunteers, in sessions of 67 minutes each, they created the masterpiece.  Entertaining everyone – visiting dignitaries, celebrities and sporting personalities, corporate citizens, and members of the public alike – lots of fun activities and performances were hosted throughout the day.

Having won an international award* for the 2016 rendition of the #MandelaMosaic, the team went further by collecting 20 400 cans of food to build this year’s 16m X 8m image, thus donating even more to LEAP and its designated community projects.   Monies raised from generous corporates and from ticket sales to Canal Walk’s annual theatre production in 2016, also contributed to the establishment of LEAP’s own on-site teacher-training institute in association with UNISA.  Practical training is carried out in the LEAP schools with the aim of growing a strong contingent of educators who can lead SA into the future.  

Merlin Norman, Marketing Manager at Rhodes Food Group, the primary sponsor of the canned food for the Mandela Day Mosaic, commented: “We are committed to giving back and making a difference in our communities through the food that we produce, and through our partnership with Canal Walk Shopping Centre and LEAP schools, we are able to assist in providing a meal to children at school. We are therefore proud to participate again in the Mandela Day at Canal Walk by contributing over 20 000 cans of Rhodes Quality products to the Mandela Mosaic Project.”

A percentage of the proceeds from the staging of Peter Pan that took place these school holidays, along with the bighearted financial gesture of R250 000 from the Hyprop Foundation and other keen corporate donors, also contributed to LEAP to continue the organisation’s endeavours.

We all need to remember and uphold the values of Nelson Mandela.

* Canal Walk Shopping Centre received the International Council of Shopping Centres (ICSC) Foundation European Community Support Award, for their ‘Mandela Day Mosaic’ campaign.  The prestigious award was announced at the Solal Awards ceremony, European Marketing Conference event held in Vienna, Austria on 8th June 2017.  The award was accompanied by a donation of $5,000 donation for the no-fee LEAP Science and Math Schools, (LEAP), beneficiary of the campaign.
