The 9th Annual Century City Sports Festival
Excitement is mounting in the countdown for the ninth annual Century City Sports Festival, the sporting highlight of the year on the Century City calendar, which will take place from Thursday 2 March until Sunday 5 March.
This year the festival has been extended by an extra day to add SNAG (Starting New At Golf) – aimed in particular at Century City corporates - to the programme on the Thursday. The festival’s inaugural golf event is being organized by Caylix Sport who will have a number of sports legends in attendance, including Sally Little, arguably SA’s greatest ever woman golfer.
The festival includes 10 sports codes with the signature event being the highly rated Century City 10km Express road race which is again expected to attract runners from around the country. Offering some of the top cash prizes in the country, the race forms part of the Western Province Athletics calendar.
Building on the success of previous years, the race will be held on Saturday 4 March over a flat, fast course and is again expected to attract a large number of runners many attempting to achieve personal best times over the distance and to win the R10 000 purse!
The Century City 10km Express, which starts at 7am on the Saturday, will be followed by a 2,5km Family Fun Run/Walk at 7.15am where more than 200 JAG runners from the JAG Foundation will be participating.
Runners are encouraged to register on line at www.entrytime.co.za or at the Century City parkrun on 25 February, or between 17h00 and 19h00 on Thursday 2 March at the Century City Club House. Limited registration will be available on the day from 5h30.
Providing both participatory and spectator sports, the festival will again be held in and around Central Park and will include fun, food and entertainment for the whole family.
Chris Blackshaw, CEO of the Century City Property Owners’ Association, the non-profit company responsible for the day to day running of Century City, said more than 7000 people participated in last year’s festival and they expected this year’s to be even bigger and better.
“Last year around 2500 runners took part in the 10km Road Race compared to just a few hundred in the first year. It has grown exponentially every year in both stature and popularity and we expect this year’s race to be the best yet.”
The festival will also include Schools & Corporate Touch Rugby, Five-a-side Soccer, a Circuit Cycling Kermesse, Stand UP Paddling, Canoe Polo,Canoeing, Dragon Boat Racing as well as Junior Cricket. This year both the Five A-Side Soccer will take place on Saturday at the Fives Futbol Arena opposite Canal Walk while the Corporate Touch Rugby will take place on Sunday at Central Park.
Blackshaw said they were extremely pleased to add SNAG golf to the mix as this would provide an extra arm of fun to the festival and a wonderful team building opportunity for Century City corporates.
