8th annual Century City Sports Festival takes place 11-13 March

22 February 2016

The eighth annual Century City Sports Festival, the signature event of which is the highly rated Century City 10km Express road race, will take place from Friday 11 March until Sunday 13 March.

The festival, which is the sporting highlight of the year on the Century City calendar, is aimed at both corporate teams and individual participants, drawing competitors from far afield.

Providing both participatory and spectator sports, the festival will again be held in and around Central Park and will include fun, food and entertainment for the whole family.

The Century City 10km Express, which offers some of the top cash prizes in the country, forms part of the Western Province Athletics calendar. Building on the success of previous years, the race will be held on Saturday 12 March over a flat, fast course and is again expected to attract a large number of runners, many from out of town, attempting to achieve personal best times over the distance and to win the R10 000 purse!

The top men and women runners will not only each receive a R10 000 cash prize but also R3500 in Canal Walk vouchers. Runners up will receive a R1500  purse and a further R1500 in Canal Walk vouchers and those placed third will each receive R1000 in cash and R1000 in Canal Walk vouchers.

All other category winners will also receive cash prizes or vouchers and the first 3000 finishers will receive medals.

The Century City 10km Express, which starts at 7am on the Saturday, will be followed by a 2,5km Family Fun Run/Walk at 7.15am where more than 200 JAG runners from the JAG Foundation will be participating.

Runners are encouraged to register on line at or on the Friday evening before from 16h00 to 18h00 at the Century City Club House. Limited registration, which will open at 5.30am, will be available on the day.

Chris Blackshaw, CEO of the Century City Property Owners’ Association, the non-profit company responsible for the day to day running of Century City, said more than 7000 people participated in last year’s festival and they expect this year’s to be even bigger and better.

“Last year around 2500 runners took part in the 10km Road Race compared to just a few hundred in the first year. It has grown exponentially every year in both stature and popularity and we expect this year’s race to be the best yet.”

The festival will also include Schools & Corporate Touch Rugby, Five-a-side Soccer, a Circuit Cycling Kermesse, Stand UP Paddling, Canoe Polo, Dragon Boat Racing as well as Junior Cricket.  This year the Five A-Side Soccer will take place on Saturday at the Fives Futbol Arena opposite Canal Walk while the  Corporate Touch Rugby will take place on Sunday at Central Park.

Blackshaw added that great spot prizes, medals and lucky draws will be awarded for participants in all sporting events.
