Canal Walk alone is expected to attract more than 2.4 million shoppers in December, of which more than 100 000 are anticipated on Christmas Eve, according to Vanessa Herbst, Marketing Manager for the shopping centre.

Chris Blackshaw, CEO of the Century City Property Owners’ Association (CCPOA) says the Operational Management Forum, which is driven by the CCPOA and which co-ordinates and facilitates law enforcement, security, traffic and disaster management issues within Century City, has been proactively preparing for the 2017 Festive Season.

Representatives from Canal Walk, Ratanga Junction, SAPS, City Law Enforcement, Milnerton Traffic Department and Century City Security recently met with CCPOA management to update the plan.

In terms of traffic, all the signalized intersections are on the SCOOT system which results in signal timings changing automatically according to real time traffic patterns.

Blackshaw said the newly opened Century City Security Operations Centre (SOC) has a direct line to the Goodwood Traffic Management Centre’s operations manager to facilitate rapid adjustment to timing settings of traffic signals when required.

“SOC’s Traffic Management CCTV console will monitor traffic patterns in and around Century City with the desk monitored 24/7 by a trained CCTV operator.

“SOC is now able to view selected Freeway traffic cameras via the new link with the TMC. Real time traffic information on the neighbouring Freeways is useful as Century City traffic flows are directly affected by Freeway traffic congestion.”

Blackshaw said extra parking assistants will assist with flow of traffic into and out of Canal Walk and there will be temporary parking signage guiding traffic both off the Boulevard and within Canal Walk parking areas.

In addition, Century City’s two Traffic Officers will work split shifts from 06h00 and 22h00 and City Traffic will arrange a second vehicle for the Traffic Officers for when their shifts overlap. Century City’s two contracted Law Enforcement Officers will also work the busiest shifts with overtime allocated according to operational requirements.

Blackshaw said to accommodate the anticipated parking demand on peak days and on Sundays (when Hillsong Church requires parking), Ratanga Junction will be using the parking garages at The Square and again the electronic Variable Messaging System (VMS) will be used to guide motorists.

Regarding public transport, he said the MyCiTi , Golden Arrow and mini bus taxi services will operate until 22h30 to accommodate the extended Canal Walk trading hours.

He said all Century City security service providers including the 24/7 Century City SOC, CCTV surveillance operators and the two Metro Law Enforcement Officers deployed to Century City will be on heightened alert and Canal Walk and Ratanga Junction have both stepped up their security.

“SAPS has included Century City in their Festive Season Plan. SAPS Milnerton will deploy an officer to the SOC to assist with any issues and expedite any action when necessary.

“CCPOA foot and bicycle patrols have been reviewed and additional bicycle patrols have been introduced to ensure increased visibility.

Blackshaw stressed that in the event of an emergency the Century City SOC should be contacted immediately who in turn would contact SAPS, City Traffic Control Centre and other emergency services.

The contact number for the 24/7 Century City SOC is 021 202 1000.
