Ritma Grizane, a Latvian artist resident in Milnerton, Cape Town, held an exhibition at Century City Hotel on 13 December, consisting of the 100 portraits she painted during the #100dayportraitchallenge, initiated on Instagram.

The unveiling of the collection took place during a cocktail event, with many of the portrait muses in attendance.

“ The objective was to do 100 portraits in 100 days in any medium and improve on your portrait skills.  I decided that this would be a great challenge to take part of and started painting portraits of my friends and family in oil paint on canvas sheets” says Ritma.  “Every person we meet leaves a mark in our life and these portraits are contributions to these marks.”

The last portraits are painted using a Zorn palette of only 4 colors: white, black, vermilion red and ochre yellow.

On the following Sunday, Ritma did a demo painting of a new portrait at the Century City Hotel.

Since the exhibition and challenge ended, Ritma continued painting a variety of portraits in the same style, with subjects ranging from local celebrities such as Springbok Rugby captain, Siya Kolisi, to a selection of the cast of Game of Thrones.

At the Century City Natural Goods Market held on 26 January, Ritma exhibited a selection of her paintings and held a demo painting where she completed a portrait of Yolandi Visser of Die Antwoord.

Ritma was born in Latvia (Eastern Europe) and moved to Cape Town after meeting her Capetoninan husband while studying in The Netherlands. They now have three children together and reside in the Milnerton area. A self-taught artist, Ritma picked up paintbrushes in 2008 and have been painting on and off ever since.
