Intaka Island Eco-Centre is flying

Intaka Eco CentreIntaka Island Environmental Education Centre, which celebrates its first birthday shortly, is fast realizing its full educational potential with the number of visitors in the first eight months of the year up 35% over the previous year.

Construction of the Eco-Centre has now been completed with the addition of wooden viewing decks spanning the water. Activity room furniture has been installed and the Eco-Centre has been equipped with teaching aids, including a microscope which can be projected onto a screen, which increases the offering and use of the facility, particularly for higher grade school learners.

In addition the staff complement has been boosted. Jarrod Lyons, was appointed as coordinator of the Centre from the beginning of 2011. Reporting to him are three field rangers, Samantha Blandile, Skhumbuzo Mbewu and Thembananai Mgazi, a cleaner, M abaseka Silase and Tamryn Thompson who was recently appointed to run the reception and front desk.

These developments, along with a concerted marketing drive, will further assist the Eco-Centre reach its short-term goal of hosting at least 20 000 visitors a year.

More than 100 schools have been contacted directly in the past couple of months and bookings have picked up considerably with the Eco-Centre having been fully booked for September and strong bookings beyond.
